How to grow methi (fenugreek) at home

Fast, foolproof and ready in under a month — methi is the crop to grow when you want a quick win. Even the seeds from your spice jar will do.

Methi (fenugreek) is the crop to reach for when you want to feel like a gardening genius in a hurry. Scatter seeds densely across a wide, shallow pot, barely cover them, keep them moist, and you’ll have fresh green leaves to harvest in about a month. It grows best in the cool season (roughly October–February) but is forgiving enough to grow most of the year with a bit of shade.

The lovely part: the same yellow methi seeds sitting in your spice jar work perfectly — no special packet required. Cut the leaves just above soil level and it’ll often regrow for another harvest or two, and the very same seeds grown thickly on a tray give you methi microgreens in under a fortnight. Few crops give back this much, this fast.

  1. Grab a wide, shallow container

A broad pot, grow bag or tray at least 15 cm deep, filled with loose potting mix and compost. Methi is all about leaf, so surface area beats depth.

  2. Sow thick

Broadcast the seeds densely across the surface — no fussy spacing needed; crowding actually gives you a better leafy crop. (Soak them overnight first to speed things up.)

  3. Cover lightly and water

Barely cover with about a centimetre of soil, then water gently with a can or spray so you don’t wash the seeds around. Keep it moist, not soggy.

  4. Wait a few days

Partial shade in hot months, full sun when it’s cool. Seeds sprout in 3–5 days. Only thin if it’s wildly crowded.

  5. Cut and come again

Harvest at 15–20 days when plants are 15–20 cm tall, snipping just above soil level — leave a little and it’ll regrow for a second or even third cut.

Quick wins

  • Soak first — an overnight soak drops germination from ~5 days to 2–3
  • Grow it as microgreens — scatter thickly on a shallow tray, don’t cover, harvest tender sprouts in 10–12 days
  • Feed for regrowth — a little compost or vermicompost after the first cut spurs a stronger second
  • Barely any pests — if aphids show up, a neem spray or a water jet sorts them out

Frequently asked questions

How long does methi take to grow?

Leaves are ready in about 25–30 days from sowing. Seeds germinate in 3–5 days (2–3 if soaked overnight).

Can I use kitchen methi seeds to grow it?

Yes — the yellow fenugreek seeds used in cooking grow perfectly. Soak them 8–12 hours before sowing for faster germination.

How many times can I harvest from one sowing?

Usually 2–3 cuts. Snip leaving 2–3 cm of stem and the plant regrows; after that, resow fresh.

Why are my methi leaves turning yellow?

Usually too much water or poor drainage. Use a container with drainage holes and let the surface dry slightly between waterings.
